Sometimes I get so 'caught up in life' that I forget to cherish, treasure, embrace these moments and count my blessings. Sometimes I just get too busy, and there are (in my opinion!) too many things going "wrong." Where is joy in the midst of this crazy, chaotic world we live in? How do we slow down enough? and How do we ever learn to find God and FULLY live this life He gave us? Wow...those are some good questions, and I don't know about you - but I'd love to find out the answers and the practical 'how-to' to those questions!
I recently picked up a book that I've heard a lot about in the past year, but have never sat down and read, until now. One Thousand Gifts, by Ann Voskamp is the title of the book, and it is is a life-changing book that inspires, encourages and helps us to find and treasure the everyday blessings that are surrounding us.
Besides wanting to know the answers to the above questions, I also felt a "connection" of sorts to the author, Ann, as she is a fellow homeschooling mom (of six children!) In addition to this, she is real. That is, she's suffered, she's had a story that did not have a 'happily ever after' ending, she's struggled - and yet somehow through the midst of it all, she has fought the fight and come to the place where she believes that in God there is joy and that as gritty, and tough as life may seem at times - there are many gifts that God has given us - and we need to grab hold of them and celebrate them! Ann Voskamp gives her readers hope...that we too can experience a life full of JOY.
As I read through One Thousand Gifts, I found that it was an excellent reminder to slow down, to find those blessings (however small or big they may be!) that God has given me. The crazy thing in this life is that we are often dreaming of the 'perfect life' or the 'life we wish we had'. In One Thousand Gifts, Ann shares that by giving thanks for the life she already had, she found the life that she'd always wanted. Profound.
One Thousand Gifts is written in a poetic, lyrical manner and is full of descriptive words and she really helps to bring the images in the book to life with her amazing way with language. I am normally not a huge fan of poetic reading, but Ann's writing style flows well and is easy to comprehend and understand which made this book an enjoyable and easy read. In addition to plenty of inspiration, personal stories and the guidance to answer some of these thought provoking questions that enter our minds, Ann's book also has study questions at the back that are great for provoking additional discussion or thought. These study questions are great to go through on your own, and they also work well for a setting such as a Bible Study group.
One Thousand Gifts presents a challenge to us - "to live fully, right where you are." It causes us to think, to go deeper and to give thanks for our everyday blessings. I would highly recommend this book to family or friends...it could transform your life forever.
